The UK government is introducing Simpler Recycling reforms to create a consistent waste collection system across England by 2026. This means businesses, workplaces, and households will soon be required to separate their recyclable waste in a standardised way, ensuring materials are processed correctly and efficiently.
With businesses producing a significant amount of waste each year, these changes aim to increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste, and support the UK’s environmental targets. Organisations must begin preparing for these reforms now to ensure compliance and avoid disruption.
What Is Changing?
Currently, recycling rules vary across different councils, leading to confusion and inconsistent recycling rates. The Simpler Recycling system will standardise collections across England, meaning businesses will need to sort their waste into clear categories to ensure proper recycling.

- Recyclable materials must be separated into specific categories, including:
- Paper & Cardboard
- Plastic
- Glass
- Metal
- Food Waste (for businesses producing over 5kg per week)
- General waste and recycling cannot be mixed – businesses must keep recyclable materials separate.
- All businesses must have a recycling collection in place, regardless of size or industry.
- Councils will follow a standard approach to waste collection, ensuring consistency across England.
These rules will apply to offices, shops, restaurants, warehouses, factories, and all other business premises, as well as households and public sector organisations.
Why Are These Changes Being Introduced?
The UK generates millions of tonnes of waste every year, yet much of it ends up in landfill or incineration unnecessarily due to inconsistent recycling practices. The government aims to:
- Increase recycling rates by ensuring all businesses and homes follow the same rules.
